At first, to even think of the Etnia Barcelona Foundation ever working with the Barraquer Foundation seemed like a dream, but finally we actually made it happen! Mauritania was our shared destination. Barraquer set out to operate on as many cases of cataracts as possible, while our aim was to detect and correct the visual problems of the Mauritanian population in general.
So, at five on a Friday morning in October there we all were at the airport, a team of seven people, led by the extraordinary Dr Samann. About to embark on the most unforgettable adventure.
Over the seven days of the expedition we worked tirelessly.
WE SAW A TOTAL OF 850 MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN. 850. WE FOUND 186 CASES IN NEED OF PRESCRIPTION GLASSES. WE PROVIDE 200 PAIRS OF SUNGLASSES FOR PATIENTS WHO HAD CATARACT OPERATIONS.
